How to Get More Google Reviews Without Breaking Google's Rules

Most happy customers never leave a review because nobody asked them at the right moment. Here is a simple routine that works, and stays inside Google's rules.

Why reviews matter

People read reviews before they call, book or buy. Google also says reviews count towards how prominent a business looks in local results, alongside how relevant and how close it is. More recent, honest reviews help on both fronts.

First, the rules

Google does not allow:

  • Paying for reviews, or giving discounts, gifts or lucky draws in return for one.
  • Asking only happy customers and steering unhappy ones away. This is called review gating.
  • Reviews written by you, your staff or your family.

Breaking these can get reviews removed and your listing restricted. The good news: you do not need any of it.

The routine

Step 1. Get your review link

Open your Google Business Profile and look for "Ask for reviews". Copy the short link. That one link is all your customers need.

Step 2. Ask your past customers first

Go through the customers you served in the last 12 to 24 months. Send each one a short, personal WhatsApp message. For example:

Hi Sarah, thank you again for choosing us for your kitchen in March. If you have a minute, a short Google review would really help a small business like ours: [your link]. Thank you!

Use their name and mention the job. A personal message gets far more replies than a bulk one.

Step 3. Ask every new customer a day after the job

The day after is when the experience is fresh and the customer is still happy. Make it part of how you finish every job.

Step 4. One gentle reminder, then stop

If they have not left a review after a few days, one polite reminder is fine. After that, leave it.

Step 5. Reply to every review

Thank people by name for good reviews. For a bad one, reply calmly, say sorry for the experience, and offer to sort it out privately. Other customers read your replies as much as the review itself.

Step 6. Give unhappy customers a way to reach you

Next to your review link, offer an equally easy way to tell you directly. Never instead of the Google link. A customer who is heard often comes back.

Make it automatic

Once the routine works, it can run on its own: a WhatsApp message the day after each job, one reminder, and an alert to you for every new review so you can reply the same day. That is what we set up for clients, using their own WhatsApp number.
